Tech road woes continue with loss to Longhorns

AUSTIN - No. 9 Texas scored a pair of runs in each of the first three innings on Sunday to help the Longhorns extend Texas Tech's troubles on the road with an 8-1 victory at UFCU Disch Falk Field.

The Red Raiders (11-17, 4-5) have not won a road series since 2004. Tech has lost 20 consecutive series and is just 3-14 this season away from Dan Law Field.

Tech's lone run came on a solo home run by Jeremy Mayo, his second of the series and fifth of the season.

The Red Raiders, though, had other opportunities to score. Tech stranded eight runners on base, including two in the first and three in the fifth.

Willie Rueda opened the game with a single. He took second on a wild pitch. Joey Kenworthy followed with a walk, but following a sacrifice bunt by Michael Reed, the Red Raiders couldn't push across a run. Chris Richburg popped out to second and Scott LeJeune ended the inning by striking out.

Rueda got the offense started again in the fifth with a two-out single. Kenworthy and Reed followed with singles to load the bases, but Richburg flied out to left to end the threat.

Nathan Karns (1-3) took the loss. He pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out two.

Tech's first three relievers - Robert Kilcrease, Ben Flora and Colton Farrar - each gave up runs, but Cory Large didn't allow a run, hit or walk in the final 32/3 innings.

The Red Raiders will play at No. 21 New Mexico Tuesday and Wedensday before hosting Texas A&M next weekend.
